STILL UNDER CONSTRUCITON!

Suggested foods for the MP

Many of the items here are what I use. You may have different suppliers or brands. Be sure to do your homework if making substitutions.

Cheese
Eat cheese in moderation and as a flavor enhancer. The rule of thumb for cheese is the level of Vitamin A - if Vit A is above 6%, then the cheese was probably made with fortified milk and will have a high D level. (The Vit A isn't bad for you, it's just an indicator of what milk was used)

Eggs
I love eggs. I can't have them, and neither can you. You can, and should, eat the whites though. Avoid the yolks at all costs. Whites only. You can do this with fresh eggs or get egg whites in a carton at the grocery. BE SURE TO CHECK FOR ADDED VITAMIN D! Egg "substitutes" such as Eggbeaters have D added (although the Eggbeaters brand does have a "whites only" that seems to be OK)! Be careful. Look for 100% egg whites with nothing else added.

Meats
There are lots of good meats out there, but I have had the best luck with organic meats. It may be me, but I think I can react to the antibiotics that some animals get, so I go with organic whenever possible. Chicken, beef, or venison are all fine. Avoid any pork or pork products - much vitamin D in pork.
Sausages
Chicken sausages can be OK, but you need to look at the ingredient list carefully for additives.

One brand I have used is Al Fresco - they make a very tasty Teriaki Ginger sausage that is good for lunch or dinner or even a snack since they are fully cooked. Available at Market Basket stores in the Eastern USA.
Trader Joe's has some very good chicken breakfast sausages (uncooked). Fry them all at once on very low heat as one big batch. Turn till they are nice and brown, then let them cool (except the one you eat right away!) and put them in a ziplock bag or tupperware in the fridge. Microwave for about 30 seconds to reheat 2 of them. I have 2 with my eggwhites for breakfast every morning.

Peanut butter
Look for something with low sugar added and avoid anything that MIGHT contain Sunflower oil. If it just says "oil", don't trust it. Makes a nice snack, but probably has more sugar than you should have regularly. Feel free to use as a flavorant. I've been eating Skippy "Natural" lately. Pretty widely available in the US. Not recommended if you are going for really low carb.

Flours
Use ONLY unenriched flours. Hodgson Mills make good whole wheat, graham, and white flours. I believe King Arthur is OK as well. Whole wheat and graham are preferred for their lower glycemic index. Again, moderation is suggested due to the high carb content of any flour.

Garlic
Garlic is a toughie. I love the stuff, but many people find it really increases the herxing. It seems to potentiate something. Feel free to use it, but if you are having a tough ride for the next couple of days, try cutting out the garlic and see if it helps. It's a shame to leave it out if you don't have to.

Veggies

NO MUSHROOMS - PERIOD -

Look for low carb or low glycemic-index veggies. Avoid things like potatoes, rice, and corn. Zucchini, broccoli, asparagus, and cauliflower are good. Spinach is also good (see the creamed spinach, which you'll like, even if you don't like spinach) Frozen veggies are fine and handy to use.

Trader Joe's Brand
For those of you with access to Trader Joe's stores, here are items I've found to be MP friendly and pretty good stuff: Chicken Breakfast Sausages (uncooked) Italian Sausage (precooked) (add list here)

Other Brands of products

Postum, Piro, and cocoa
Cocoa
Cocoa powder is good stuff. You can make hot chocolate with it. Check the recipes.
I have recently found a cocoa powder that I simply love, it is a "full fat" cocoa, and it is rich stuff. Royal Mahogany - Extra Dark Brown Dutched 22/24 Cocoa Powder This is their darkest "Dutched" cocoa, if you like something a little lighter try the Noble Salmwood - Medium Brown Dutched 22/24 Cocoa Powder - still a full fat type. Since this drink is for a treat, you might as well go for it, right?

Be advised that the full fat cocoa has a shorter shelf life, so put the bulk of it in the freezer in a zipbag or tupperware and only keep a small amount out. This is the best cocoa for the price that I have found. The 5 pound bag is a real bargain! Besides, you can share it with friends. Or share it and make friends. And of course, don't look at the products on the rest of that site. Avert your eyes! (no affiliation, just a rather stupified customer)

Postum Roma, Cafix, Piro, and Inka are "coffee substitutes" made from roasted grain. They are coffeeish, and you'll get used to them pretty quick. They are good with a little half&half and Splenda. I'm avoiding coffee (even decaf) because of the Chlorogenic acid in it. You should too! It's almost as bad as "D" on the MP. Look for them near the instant coffee in the grocery. (Don't look for Postum anymore - after 112 years of non-stop production, Kraft just decided to drop it. There is talk that someone else may pick up the brand. Let's hope so. I like Postum!)
